24.3 — March 22, 2024

This version of Kineo improves the quality of animations exported as Spatial Video.

24.2 — February 8, 2024

This version improves a lot of little annoyances on Vision Pro:

  • Previous frame reminders (“onion skins”) now appear behind content instead of hiding your newest drawings.
  • Playing an animation happens in the same area as drawing, rather than jumping in front of the tool bar.
  • Hid the toggle for the Kineo Pro “hide watermark” feature, as Kineo Pro is not yet available on Vision Pro.
  • The help button is now properly titled “Help” instead of “RootView.settingsButton”.

24.1 — February 2, 2024

This update adds a lot of little improvements to Kineo on Vision Pro, including a help screen, page actions, and more!

24.0 — January 30, 2024

With Kineo, you can create stunning hand-drawn animations on Vision Pro. Kineo’s flipbook-style drawing tools make it easy for you to create and share your animations with the world. On Vision Pro, you can even arrange your drawings in front and behind each other in 3D space.

Kineo shows you faint reminders of the last few pages, making it easy to draw the next. When you’re done, you can share your creation on your favorite social networks; you can even save them as Spatial Video!

Note: This version never actually shipped to users. Version 24.1 was the first public version of Kineo for Vision Pro.

23.4 — July 12, 2023

This version of Kineo fixes a rare crash when attempting to delete all of your existing animations.

23.3 — May 13, 2023

Kineo 23.3 adds animated GIF export—select it as a format in the “…” when sharing an animation!

This version also fixes an issue that could cause animations to not open on iPhone or when using side-by-side windows on iPad.

…that’s a soft-G GIF, by the way.

23.2 — March 26, 2023

Turns out there’s multiple meanings of the word “last”!

Kineo 23.2 fixes another crash, when you’re deleting the last remaining page in a single-page animation.

23.1 — March 20, 2023

Kineo 23.1 squashes another obnoxious bug: if you were looking at the last page of an animation, and deleted it, the app would crash.

23.0 — March 14, 2023

Kineo 23.0 fixes a few obnoxious bugs:

  • A crash would occur if you long-pressed the + button for adding a new page.
  • It was impossible to export an animation on the first-ever launch of the app, after seeing or skipping the app tutorial.

New features are underway and should be appearing soon! Thank you for your patience.

22.3 — August 23, 2022

Kineo 22.3 fixes a few bugs with the gallery view, which shows all your animations:

  • When long-pressing an animation, the preview had no background color or image, causing your animation to play over the rest of the gallery instead.
  • When long-pressing an animation, there was a “Share” menu item that had no effect. This menu item now works.

22.2 — July 22, 2022

This new version of Kineo adds a new Kineo Pro feature: background images! Draw fun animations over your favorite photos—doodle on your pets, friends, family, and more!

This feature is available on both iOS and iPadOS and is free to all existing Kineo Pro users.

22.1 — May 24, 2022

Introducing Kineo Pro—powerful extra features for Kineo! Kineo Pro currently includes the following features:

  • Zoom in on your animation! Zooming in allows you to have more control over fine details. The drawing tools stay at the same size when zooming in, letting you draw much smaller lines than previously possible. (Only on iPad.)

  • Remove the “kineo.app” watermark that appears on shared videos. Want to focus your videos on the work you’ve created? Hide the Kineo advertisement that previously appeared on all exports.

Many more Pro features are planned very soon, and they’ll all be included in this one-time purchase!

This version also includes bug fixes for all users. This includes a common crash which would happen if you used the eraser and then immediately changed pages. Erasing should now be a much less treacherous act. :)

22.0 — March 21, 2022

This update gives you more power over your animation canvas! You can now select a different color for your animation background, such as a bright blue sky, yellow “sticky note”, or black for a cool dark mode! Stickers in iMessage now include the canvas, so you can show off the colors you’ve chosen.

Kineo also now includes a quick guide for first-time users, to get you started drawing and animating quickly.

This release also fixes a few bugs:

  • Scrolling the page strip should always have hidden the “previous pages” images. It now does so.
  • In some circumstances, you could accidentally trigger the “welcome to Kineo” page multiple times. Now it will only ever appear once.

21.1 — May 2, 2021

Sharing your animations just got a big overhaul! Animations aren’t tied to an ugly pointy square any more—you can now share them with the canvas you see in Kineo.

Kineo now also supports different video shapes. In addition to the existing square, there’s now support for both horizontal and vertical videos, so your videos will look their best, no matter where you share them.

We’ve also made it easier to switch between looping and bouncing animations—switching between these is now just the tap of a button.

21.0 — March 2, 2021

This update tackles a few of the more commonly-requested features for Kineo. You can now delete, duplicate, and rearrange frames of your animation.

20.4 — November 11, 2020

Mostly this update is just to squash a few bugs that happen in the new release of iOS, but I also managed to sneak one small feature in there: when taking a screenshot of Kineo, cropping the screenshot will now nicely “snap” to the canvas, allowing you to perfectly align your image.

20.3 — August 23, 2020

Another small update this time.

  • Even more undo fixes. I really think it works this time?
  • Better preview when sharing animations.
  • The thumbnails in the gallery now have more accurate colors. Make any change to an existing animation to “fix” the thumbnail.
  • Fixed the current version number in settings; it now shows the correct version number instead of “20.0”.

20.2 — July 7, 2020

This release is just a bit of spit and polish on everything.

  • Fixed a few bugs related to undo.
  • Fixed a bug where sometimes a new page would duplicate the previous page.
  • Minor visual tweaks (buttons look button-ier)

20.1 — May 18, 2020

This new version of Kineo adds support for the new keyboard and cursor integration on iPad. You can now use a trackpad or mouse to select images, draw, and more!

This version also includes:

  • Fixing a bug where undoing a drawing would not save
  • Improvements to VoiceOver support for looping or bouncing an animation
  • Minor user interface improvements

20.0 — April 1, 2020

Kineo is back! I figured a decade without an update was enough time to need more than just a minor update, so let's do a full reboot! Brand-new features include:

  • Multiple drawing tools
  • iCloud syncing
  • Video export and sharing
  • iMessage sticker support

1.3 — April 1, 2010

Added iPad universal version.

1.2.1 — February 3, 2010

The release notes for this version are lost to history. As are the release notes (and, for that matter, the release date) for versions 1.2, 1.1.1, 1.1, 1.0.5, 1.0.3, 1.0.2, and 1.0.1. The App Store literally didn’t track release dates before that. I don’t know where I’d even go to look up that kind of information. Sorry. :(

And yes, that list of release versions is correct. No, I don’t know why there isn’t a 1.0.4. I blame App Review Gremlins.
